Meet Lathen Quartz (Character Interview by Tena Stetler)
Please tell us your name and a little bit about you.
My name is Lathen Quartz – I spent most my adult life in the Navy SEALs. A mission gone terribly wrong ended my career, or at least that’s what I thought. Now, Pepper and Lobster Cove Wildlife Rescue and Rehab are my life. I have to admit when I started out I had no idea what all this would entail, or the obstacles. Working side by side every day with a witch is an interesting situation. Never a dull moment. Ghosts squabbling and appearing out of now where, magic going haywire, curses, black magic…
What gets you through the tough times?
The knowledge that I have overcome my disabilities, physical and mental to put my life back together. And the love and support of a strong woman and family.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
Going back home and reconnecting with my family and pack. I left under terrible circumstances. Also working with Pepper to build Lobster Cove Wildlife Rescue and Rehab Center. Through the Center we are not only able to help the wildlife brought to the center, but able to give back by providing jobs and support to veterans that are having trouble getting on their feet after injuries.
What obstacles stand in the way of your happiness?
Leaving my emotions scars behind and learning to trust again.
If you could travel back in time to change one thing in your past, what would it be?
Go back to before I was forced out of my pack due to my dangerous behavior after physically recovering from injuries received while on assignment. I’d work harder to address my mental problems, let my family and pack help me rather than push them away. But that is a double edge sword, if I had done that, I may never have met Pepper and she is the best thing that ever happened to me.
About A Witch’s Holiday Wedding
Elemental witch, Pepper McKay and former Navy SEAL, Lathen Quartz have built Lobster Cove Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center on enchanted McKay land. During a romantic interlude on Halloween night, Pepper happily agrees to become Lathen’s wife. What better day than Winter Solstice for their wedding in a town that loves celebrations and Christmas. However, planning a wedding and operating their wildlife center takes a toll on both Pepper and Lathen.
When the couple takes a much-needed break for Thanksgiving with family in Colorado, a Maine snowstorm fills the center with injured wildlife. Lathen finds himself drawn into a covert military mission, while trying to deal with issues concerning friends and family. Pepper wants to cancel the wedding. Is she having second thoughts? Will the nosy McKay ghosts, Lathen’s werewolf pack, Pepper’s parents, and her best friend help or hinder the wedding and holiday plans?
Excerpt
A couple days before the wedding, Pepper and Lathen strolled through the town square waiting for the others to finish shopping across the street. She sucked in a breath and pointed to a tall, thin hooded figure, head down walking directly in their path. Suddenly, he glanced up, veered right, and ducked behind the tall decorated tree in the center of town square.
Lathen dropped Pepper’s hand and gave chase. Within a couple of minutes, Lathen appeared on the other side of the tree, hands out in front of him, palms up, shaking his head. “He disappeared. As if by—”
“Magic.” Pepper finished for him.
